This is actually an update to my earlier post, last week Telekom Srbija launched its LoRa network that’s covering wider area of Belgrade, but they announced national coverage in near future. Use case is to establish security control over underground cable infrastructure of Telekom Srbija and finally solve the problem of unauthorized access and cable theft. This news started public discussion: are they really first in the region with platform for development IoT services based on LoRa technology (what pops up on my mind is the earlier announcement from Solvera Lynx), why LoRa and not NB-IoT (MNOs with 4G network from Release 13 onward have an option to offer NB-IoT and CAT-M).
What I find the most important and most positive is that they did it together with company Bitgear which is a spin-off from the business incubator at the University of Belgrade’s technical faculty. This company is developing solutions for businesses working on connected devices and IoT networks. I believe that these kind of companies are especially important for countries in SEE region. So, helping them to domestically develop solutions for the world’s latest technologies is the way to go.
